About

The Malta UNESCO Youth Association (MUYA) is a registered Voluntary Organisation (registration number VO/0150) and operating within the Maltese Islands and beyond with the primarily aim of endeavouring to spread the ideals and principles of the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) amongst (principally) Maltese youth but also other cohorts of Maltese society. Established in 2007, MUYA’s work is related to three main fields, in line with the three main pillars of the UNESCO: Education, Science and Culture and seeks to, inter alia, adhere to the principles emanating from the UNESCO 1972 World Heritage Convention calling for the protection and preservation of world cultural heritage. Throughout the past decade, MUYA has organised a number of initiatives tackling various subjects of interest that fall within its remit and devising new and innovative ways of getting the UNESCO’s message across. These have included, inter alia: (i) Training courses and youth exchanges, held both locally and internationally, and revolving around various themes (including games as tools for social inclusion, embracing cultural diversity through creativity and living a healthy lifestyle). These youth exchanges regularly allow Maltese youth to experience new and different culture while allowing international youth to get to know more about the Maltese culture and way of life; (ii) Cultural festivals and nights allowing various communities of people living on our islands to showcase traditional music, food and costumes to each other, further fostering a spirit of inclusion on a local level; (iii) The creation of book Eleo and the Bubble Planet, illustrated and written specifically for children, with the primary aim of explaining in the clearest manner possible the importance of human rights and the influence and impact they have on our daily lives; and (iv) A number of projects aimed at promoting Malta’s rich and diverse cultural heritage including the Min hu l-Malti Project that sought to analyse the views of foreigners living in Malta on what it is to be Maltese and trace Malta’s long immigration history. It is MUYA’s intention to continue to determine new means of how it can be more active in the fields of education, science and culture and to work in a closer manner with local NGOs and other institutions to leave an important footprint on the society around us.
