Description
Gautier Capuçon’s expressive artistry and phenomenal musicianship have attracted a global following. The French cellist, who performs on a magnificent Matteo Goffriller instrument from 1701, is soloist in two pieces in this evening’s fascinating programme. He opens with Gabriel Fauré’s poignant Elégie, a short work of great intensity and concentration and continues with Alexey Shor’s Musical Pilgrimage, a three-movement concerto that takes a tour of the composer’s favourite styles from a modern perspective. Gergely Madaras and his Liège musicians launch the evening with the last score to be completed by Guillaume Lekeu before his death in 1894, its substance based on melodies the Belgian composer overheard being whistled during a family gathering in Angers. The concert closes with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, in which the composer confronts fate and leaves listeners uncertain about the outcome.
The InClassica Malta International Music Festival is organised by the European Foundation for Support of Culture (EUFSC), led by Konstantin Ishkhanov, in collaboration with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO).
