Planning a summer trip to Malta? Here you’ll find stunning beaches, historic sites, vibrant nightlife, and a unique cultural experience. To ensure you have everything you need for a perfect trip, here’s the ultimate Malta summer packing list, covering clothing, accessories, and travel essentials. Plus, some tips on what to bring for different activities to ensure a seamless and enjoyable stay.

Clothing Essentials

Light and Breathable Clothing
T-Shirts and Tank Tops: Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool. Linen is an especially versatile fabric which can be dressed-down for those days by the beach, or dressed-up for a chic summer night-out outfit.
Shorts and Skirts: Perfect for the hot weather, casual strolls, and beach outings.
Wide and light-weight Bottoms: While shorts may be one of the most popular pieces to opt for when it’s hot outside, a loose pair of lightweight pants can be just as cooling, and even more comfortable.
Dresses: A flowy summer dress can be worn for daytime sightseeing and evening dinners. Always think about an item’s versatility when travelling, especially if you’ve got limited luggage space.

Beachwear
Swimsuits: Pack at least two, so you always have a dry one available.
Cover-ups: A light sarong, kaftan or beach dress for women, a linen shirt for men. These pieces are great for transitioning from the beach to other activities, like stopping for a spot of lunch at a beach lido or restaurant.
Flip-Flops or Sliders: Comfortable and easy to slip on and off at the beach. Remember, always wear some type of footwear when using communal showers.

Evening and Nightlife
Smart Casual Outfits: Light dresses, collared shirts, and chinos for dining out, entertainment or exploring Malta’s nightlife.
Light Jacket or Shawl: Evenings can sometimes get a bit breezy, especially by the sea, so a light jacket or cardigan could come in handy.

Footwear
Comfortable Walking Shoes: These are essential if you’re planning on exploring Malta’s historic sites and cobblestone streets. Walking shoes with good support are a must for long walks and uneven surfaces.
Flat Neutral Sandals: The most versatile summer shoe. These are great for leisurely walks, lunch or dinner dates, and much more. Really, any occasion calls for flat sandals. Having a flat neutral colour sandal on hand will be your outfit saviour especially when you have limited shoe options.
White sneakers: White sneakers are a classic all-year-around favourite. They are comfortable, and go with just about everything.
Water Shoes: Useful for rocky beaches or water sports activities.
Heels: We recommend heeled sandals with a wider or block heel, as well as wedges. Both of these options will give you that vertical height and ‘dressed-up’ look with an added element of comfort which stiletto heels lack. We also suggest a dressy pair of flats or low-heeled shoes, especially if you’ve had a jam-packed day. Thank us later!

Sleepwear and Undergarments
Comfortable Undergarments: Go for breathable materials, avoid nylon and synthetic materials as these don’t mix well with sweat.
Light Pyjamas: Preferably cotton, to stay cool at night although most hotels and apartments are equipped with ACs.

Accessories

Sun Protection
Sunglasses: UV protection all day every day! Protect your eyes from the strong Mediterranean sun with a fab pair of sunnies.
Sun Hat or Cap: Wide-brimmed hats provide shade and protect your face and head, while adding a stylish element to your outfit.
Sunscreen: A high SPF and preferably waterproof sunscreen to protect your skin from sunburn, whether you’re swimming or simply walking around town. Do not underestimate the Mediterranean sun!

Beach Essentials
Beach Towel: A quick-dry towel is compact and convenient.
Beach Bag: A waterproof bag to carry all your beach essentials.
Insulated cooler: If you want to keep any drinks or food fresh and cool, consider a light-weight cooler bag, especially for beach days.

Snorkelling Gear: If you enjoy snorkelling, bring your own gear to explore Malta’s underwater beauty.

Swimsuit (+1): We always recommend to pack at least 2 swimsuits, to ensure you always have a dry option.

Waterproof Phone Case: To protect your phone from water and sand.

Other Items and Accessories
Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is key, especially if you plan on having a cocktail (or two).
Small Backpack or Daypack: For carrying essentials while sightseeing. Nothing beats hands-free travel
Insect Repellent: Mosquitos thrive in wet, hot climates – avoid pesky insect bites with an insect repellent.

Travel Essentials

Important Documents
Passport and Visa (if required): Ensure they are valid for the duration of your trip, ideally you should check these well in advance to renew any expired documentation before your trip.
Travel Insurance: We highly recommend this to cover unexpected events.
Copies of Important Documents: Keep digital and physical copies of your passport, insurance, and booking confirmations.

Health and Safety
First Aid Kit: Basic supplies such as band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers.
Medications: Bring any prescription medications you need. Don’t forget to bring along a copy of your prescriptions just in case. You’ll find many pharmacies dotted along Malta and Gozo.
Hand Sanitizer: A useful hygiene product if you’ll be in locations where traditional restrooms are harder to come by, or harder to reach – such as festivals.

Electronics
Camera: Although some phones take stunning pictures, nothing beats a professional camera to capture the beautiful landscapes and memorable moments.
Adapters and Converters: Malta uses a 3-pin rectangular plug (Type G), so bring a suitable adapter.
Smartphone Charger: We’ve been there, always check that your phone’s charger is in working order before leaving home, and make sure to charge your phone completely before travelling.

Portable Charger: Ensure your devices are always charged, especially for long days out - a power-bank is a travel-must.

With this ultimate Malta summer packing list, you'll be fully equipped for an amazing trip to the Maltese Islands. Whether you're relaxing on stunning beaches, discovering historic landmarks, or experiencing the unbeatable nightlife, having the right essentials will guarantee a stress-free and enjoyable vacation.
